The National Service Scheme (NSS) is an Indian government-sponsored public service program conducted by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India which was begun in 1969. Its primary aim is personality development through social (or community) service. The NSS motto is "Not me, but you".
Objectives:
- Understand the community in which they work
- Understand themselves in relation to their community
- Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem-solving
- Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
- Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems
- Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities
- Gain skills in mobilizing community participation
- Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes
- Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and
- practice national integration and social harmony
Motto: The Motto of NSS "Not Me but You", reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for self-less service. NSS helps the students develop appreciation to other person's point of view and also show consideration to '/other living beings. The philosophy of the NSS is well doctrine in this motto, which underlines/on the belief that the welfare .of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of the society on the whole and therefore, the NSS volunteers shall strive for the well-being of the society.
Symbol: The symbol for the NSS has been based on the giant Rath Wheel of the world famous Konark Sun Temple (The Black Pagoda) situated in Orissa, India. The wheel portrays the cycle of creation, preservation and release and signifies the movement in life across time and space, The symbol thus stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social change.
Badge: The NSS Symbol is embossed on the badge. The eight bars in the wheel represent the 24 hours of a day. The red colour indicates that the volunteer is full of young blood that is lively, active, energetic and full of high spirit. The navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.
NSS Day: NSS was formally launched on 24th September,1969, the birth cenetary year of the Father the nation. Therefore 24th September is celebrated every year as NSS Day with appropriate programmes and activities.
About the NSS Unit:
An NSS Unit was granted to our college on 27-06-2019 by JNTU, Kakinada.Mr.Maruthi Krishna Nivarthi, assistant professor of English, is its first Programme Officer.The number of our NSS Unit is 90214720.At present, there are 107 volunteers under our NSS Unit.Since its inauguration, the NSS Unit has been conducting various activities of social service like Swach Bharat, Vanamahotsavam, Blood Donation, Rallies against Bad Habits, etc.Though it’s a self-financed unit, in the month of March,2020, it conducted a Special Camp at Chinathurakapalem village near our college. The list and the description of various programmes conducted by our NSS Unit are given below.
1.Blood Donation Camp (08-07-2019):
The NSS unit , with the help of the NRT Blood Bank of Narasaraopet, conducted a Blood Donation Camp on the campus on 08-07-2019. 42 volunteers donated their blood.Speaking on the occasion, Sri Gopireddy Srinivasa Reddy garu, the honouarable M.L.A. of Narasaraopet, advised the students and the people to donate blood so that they could save the lives of the people who needed it.Later, the honourable M.L.A., Sri Gopireddy Srinivasa Reddy garu, the Chairman of the college, Sri Mittapalli Venkata Koteswara Rao garu, the Secretary, Sri Mittapalli Ramesh garu and the Principal, Dr.D.Suneel garu appreciated the volunteers who had donated blood.
2.Vanamahotsavam (15-07-2019):
The NSS unit conducted Vanamahotsavam on the campus by making the volunteers plant plants in the pots kept on either side of the entrance of the lecture halls and the labs.Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary, Sri Mittapalli Ramesh garu said that by planting as many trees as we can, we can protect our environment and advised the volunteers to explain the importance of Vanamahotsavam to the remaining students.Later, the Chairman, Sri Mittapalli Venkata Koteswara Rao garu, the Secretary, Sri Mittapalli Ramesh garu, the Principal, Dr.D.Suneel garu and the HODs appreciated the students.
3.Elocution Competition on the Need of Conservation of Water (22-07-2019):
On the occasion of Jal Divas, a part of the campaign of the Jal Shakti Abhiyan Programme of the Govt.of India, the NSS unit conducted an elocution competition among the students on the Need of the Conservation of Water.Speaking on the occasion, the Principal, Dr.D.Suneel garu advised the students not to waste water and to save water.The winners of the competition were distributed the prizes and the certificates by the Chairman, Sri Mittapalli Venkata Koteswara Rao garu, the Secretary, Sri Mittapalli Ramesh garu and the Principal, Dr.D.Suneel garu.
4.Drawing Competition on Humans/Nature without Water (22-07-2019):
On the occasion of Jal Divas, a part of the campaign of the Jal Shakti Abhiyan Programme of the Govt.of India, the NSS unit conducted a drawing competition among the students on Humans/Nature without Water.A large number of students participated in this competition, and the winners of the competition were distributed the prizes and the certificates by the Chairman, Sri Mittapalli Venkata Koteswara Rao garu, the Secretary, Sri Mittapalli Ramesh garu and the Principal, Dr.D.Suneel garu.
5.Essay Writing on Mahatma Gandhiji’s Life (30-07-2019):
To grow patriotism among the students, the NSS unit conducted an essay writing competition on Mahatma Gandhi’s Life on 30-07-2019.At the end of the competition, the Principal, Dr.D.Suneel garu advised the students to learn how one should love one’s country from Gandhiji’s life.Later, the winners of the competition were distributed the prizes and the certificates by the Chairman, Sri Mittapalli Venkata Koteswara Rao garu, the Secretary, Sri Mittapalli Ramesh garu and the Principal, Dr.D.Suneel garu.
6.Awareness Programme on Prohobition of Ragging Act, 1995 (17-08-2019):
The NSS unit conducted an awareness programme on Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1995.The honourable Chairman-cum-13th Additional District Judge, Mandal Legal Services Committee, Narasaraopet, was the Chief Guest of this programme.The Chief Guest and the other guests explained various punishments that are awarded to the students who do ragging.They advised the students not to spoil their lives by doing ragging.The Principal, Dr.D.Suneel garu, the HODs, the staff and the students attended this programme.
7.Vanamahotsavam (17-08-2019):
The NSS unit conducted Vanamahotsavam on the campus ,in which the volunteers planted 50 plants.The volunteers took a pledge that they would protect the plants until they became trees.Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary, Sri Mittapalli Ramesh garu advised the volunteers and the students to protect the environment by growing plants. The Principal, Dr.D.Suneel garu, the HODs, the staff and the students attended this programme.
8.Essay Writing on Plastic Waste Free India (01-10-2019):
To grow awareness among the students on how to remove plastics from our country, the NSS unit conducted an essay writing competition on Plastic Waste Free India.A large number of students participated in this competition, and the winners of the competition were distributed the prizes and the certificates by the Chairman, Sri Mittapalli Venkata Koteswara Rao garu, the Secretary, Sri Mittapalli Ramesh garu and the Principal, Dr.D.Suneel garu.
9.Police Martyrs’ Day Celebrations (21-10-2019):
On the occasion of Police Martyrs’ Day, the NSS unit conducted a programme to make the students learn about the sacrifices of the police for the society.The honourable D.S.P.of Narasaraopet , Sri Veera Reddy garu was the Chief Guest of this programme.Speaking on the occasion, Sri Veera Reddy garu advised the students to join the police department and protect the society and he explained how the police sacrifice their lives for the society.The Principal, Dr.D.Suneel garu, the B.S&H. HOD, Mrs.Bala Chandrika garu, the staff and the students attended this programme.
10.Swach Bharat (28-10-2019):
The NSS unit conducted a Swach Bharat programme on 28-10-2019.The volunteers cleaned the campus and the surroundings, explained the need of Swach Bharat and advised the remainining students to keep their surroundings clean. Later, the Chairman, Sri Mittapalli Venkata Koteswara Rao garu, the Secretary, Sri Mittapalli Ramesh garu, the Principal,Dr.D.Suneel garu and the HODs appreciated the volunteers.
11.Essay Writing on Rashtriya Ekta Divas (31-10-2019):
On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, the NSS unit conducted an essay writing competition on how Patelji contributed to the the unity of our nation.At the end of the programme, the winners of the competition were distributed the prizes and the certificates by the Chairman, Sri Mittapalli Venkata Koteswara Rao garu, the Secretary, Sri Mittapalli Ramesh garu and the Principal, Dr.D.Suneel garu.
12.Elocution (31-10-2019):
On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, the NSS unit conducted an elocution competition on the Life and the Importance of Patelji in India before and after Independence.The Chairman, Sri Mittapalli Venkata Koteswara Rao garu advised the students to be as strong as Patel when they should be strong. The winners of the competition were distributed the prizes and the certificates by the Chairman, Sri Mittapalli Venkata Koteswara Rao garu, the Secretary, Sri Mittapalli Ramesh garu and the Principal, Dr.D.Suneel garu.
13.Pledge on Rashtriya Ekta Divas (31-10-2019):
On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, the NSS Programme Officer, Maruthi Krishna Nivarthi made the NSS volunteers take a pledge that they would protect the unity of our nation.The Chairman, Sri Mittapalli Venkata Koteswara Rao garu, the Secretary, Sri Mittapalli Ramesh garu and the Principal, Dr.D.Suneel garu appreciated the volunteers.
14.Sahaja Yoga Programme (22-11-2019):
The NSS unit invited Mr.Babu and Mrs.Ramadevi, the trainers of Sahaja Yoga, to our college and conducted a Sahaja Yoga practice session. During the inauguration, the Principal, Dr.D.Suneel garu advised the students to learn yoga and do it everyday to increase their concentration and win over the stress.Later, the trainers made the students practise different postures in Sahaja Yoga and advised them to do it everyday without fail.
15.Free Dental Check-up Programme (13-12-2019):
With the help of Siri Dentals, Narasaraopet, the NSS unit conducted a Free Dental Check-up Programme on the campus for the students of NIT.It was conducted for two days.Dr.Anila Balaswami, from Siri Dentals, tested the teeth of the students and gave the prescription to the students who were suffering from dental problems.Dr.Anila Balaswami garu and her staff were thanked by the Chairman, Sri Mittapalli Venkata Koteswara Rao garu, the Secretary, Sri Mittapalli Ramesh garu and the Principal, Dr.D.Suneel garu.
16.Rally on Disha Act:
To grow awareness among the students and the people about Disha Act,the NSS unit participated in a rally conducted in the town of Narasaraopet in the month of December.The volunteers shouted the slogans of Disha Act in the rally from JNTUN to Lord Shiva’s idol.
17.Sankranthi Sambaralu (11-01-2020):
The NSS unit conducted Sankranthi sambaralu on the campus on 11-01-2020.Smt.Dr.Gopireddy Sushmitha Reddy garu and Smt.Dr.Lavu Meghana garu were the Chief Guests , and Advocate Smt.K.Bhavani garu and Smt.Mittapalli Lakshmi garu were the honourable guests of these celebrations.Among the guests were Sri Mittapalli Venkata Koteswara Rao garu, the Chairman of the college, Sri Mittapalli Ramesh garu, the Secretary and Dr.P.Hari Krishna Prasad garu, the Principal.There were programmes like Bhogimantalu, songs by haridasas and competitions like Rangoli, 3D Drawing, Mehendi and Traditional Dress Competition.At the end of the celebrations, the winners of the competition were distributed the prizes and the certificates by the Chief Guests, the honourable guests, the Chairman, Sri Mittapalli Venkata Koteswara Rao garu, the Secretary, Sri Mittapalli Ramesh garu and the Principal, Dr.P.Hari Krishna Prasad garu.
18.Maha Sivarathri Service (21-02-2020):
On the day of Maha Sivarathri, the NSS volunteers of our college went to Kotappakonda and helped the police department in controlling the traffic and parking of the vehicles.Our volunteers also helped in the distribution of free water packets and buttermilk packets.The Circle Inspector, Sri Murali Krishna garu appreciated the volunteers of our college for their service from the morning until the evening.The Chairman, Sri Mittapalli Venkata Koteswara Rao garu, the Secretary, Sri Mittapalli Ramesh garu and the Principal, Dr.P.Hari Krishna Prasad garu appreciated the volunteers.
Special Camp Activities at Chinathurakapalem: (from 06-03-2020 to 14-03-2020)
Though ours is a self-financed NSS unit,our unit conducted a Special Camp at Chinathurakapalem village near our college from 06-03-2020 to 14-03-2020).Under the guidance of our Programme Officer,Maruthi Krishna Nivarthi, the volunteers actively participated in the following activities.
19.Swach Bharat on the Streets of Chinathurakapalem (from 06-03-20 to 07-03-20):
Both the male and the female volunteers swept the streets with brooms and removed the waste materials.They requested the villagers to keep their streets and surroundings clean.
20.Swach Bhaeat at M.P.U.P.Urdu School, Chinathurakapalem (09-03-20):
The volunteers broomed the campus of the Urdu school and removed the waste materials like iron bars, wood, etc.They advised the students of the school to throw the waste materials in the dust-bin.
21.Plantation at M.P.U.P.Urdu School at Chinathurakapalem (11-03-20):
22.Awareness Programme on Safety,Corona,Cleanliness and Free Distribution of Notebooks and Pens among the Students at M.P.U.P.Urdu School,Chinathurakapalem(12-03-20):
The volunteers conducted a meeting for the students at the Urdu school and explaine about safety,measures to be taken to be away from Carona and cleanliness.Later,they distributed notebooks and pens among the students.
23.Campaign for Cleanliness,Health and against Bad Habits at Chinathurakapalem(13-03-20):
The volunteers went to every home at Chinathurakapalem,distributed the pamphlets and explained about the need to be clean,keep our surroundings clean and to be away from bad habits like drinking,smoking,etc.
24.Rally on Carona Virus(14-03-2020):
The volunteers held a rally on Carona Virus ,shoutinf the safety masures to be taken by the people to keep themselves away from Carona Virus.They distributed the pamphlets they had made on Carona Virus.
25.Rally on the Protection of Environment at Chinathurakapalem(14-03-2020):
The volunteers held a rally on the need to protect our environment by shouting the slogans like Dig Sinking Pots,Grow Plants,Don’t Waste Water,etc.
At the end of the camp, the villagers thanked the volunteers for their service for one week at their village.They said that they would follow Swach Bharat, Protection of Environment, etc.
